The Student Library Advisory Council (SLAC) is a dedicated group of 7th and 8th-grade students who act as key partners to Mrs. Mahone, ensuring the library remains a dynamic and relevant resource for the entire middle school community.

SLAC members take on essential leadership roles in both the daily operations and major events of the library.

Core Responsibilities

  • Daily Library Support: Assist with routine tasks necessary for a smooth-running library, including checking books in and out, curating book displays, delivering copies to teachers.

  • Book Fair Management: Plan, promote, and execute our two annual fundraising Book Fairs (the Scholastic Fair and the Midtown Reader Fair). This includes designing the event space and managing sales.

  • Reading Challenge Curation: Strategically use the funds raised from the Book Fairs to select, purchase, and organize the appealing rewards for our school's Reading Challenges, directly boosting student literacy.

  • Collection Development: Provide crucial student perspective by helping the librarian choose new books that are both grade-appropriate and reflect the current high-interest reading trends among middle schoolers.

How to Join

We seek motivated and reliable students who are passionate about reading and community service. Students must have good grades and positive behavior to participate. Applications for the following school year are accepted in April. There will be announcements on the school news when the application window opens.
